Florida Atlantic slips past Southern Miss

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Cody Wilson scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Florida Atlantic to a 6-5 victory over Southern Miss on Friday in the opener of a Conference USA baseball series.

The Golden Eagles (15-5, 2-1 C-USA) had a seven-game winning streak snapped. They had won 14 straight league games.

With the game tied 5-5 in the ninth, Wilson led off with a triple. After a pair of intentional walks, J.C. Keys threw a wild pitch to allow the winning run to score on a 1-0 count.

Six home runs were hit in the game, including four by Southern Miss. Luke Reynolds homered twice, Hunter Slater hit a two-run shot and LeeMarcus Boyd a solo homer.

Tyler Frank hit two home runs for Florida Atlantic (17-5, 3-1).

Texas A&M 7, Ole Miss 6

Will Frizzell hit a two-run home run, and Texas A&M rode a fast start to a 7-6 victory over Ole Miss on Friday night.

Michael Helman went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored for Texas A&M. Frizzell’s homer was part of a four-run second inning, and Texas A&M eventually led 7-2 before Ole Miss rallied late.

Michael Fitzsimmons hit a grand slam for the Rebels to cut it to 7-6 in the eighth, but they couldn’t pull closer.

The Aggies (19-5, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) and Rebels (21-3, 3-2) have split the first two games of the three-game series, with the finale set for Saturday at 2 p.m.

Missouri 4, Mississippi State 1

Brett Bond had three hits, including a pair of RBI singles, and Kameron Misner went 3-for-4 with two runs scored as Missouri beat Mississippi State 4-1 in the opener of a Southeastern Conference baseball series on Friday night.

Bond had RBI singles in the third and seventh innings for Missouri (18-5, 2-2 Southeastern Conference).

Missouri pitcher T.J. Sikkema (2-0) struck out seven batters, walked one and scattered four hits in seven innings of work.

Mississippi State’s season-long offensive struggles continued as it remained winless in the Southeastern Conference. The Bulldogs (12-11, 0-4) only had six hits, one of them a solo home run by Luke Alexander in the sixth inning. They left seven runners on base.

Mississippi State starting pitcher Konnor Pilkington (1-3) took the loss in an uneven outing. He allowed two runs, on nine hits and two walks, in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out five, and also uncorked a wild pitch that allowed a run to score.

Mississippi State and Missouri will continue their three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. The finale is Sunday at 1 p.m.
