Units from the Culkin Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 1101 Riverbend Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday morning county fire coordinator Jerry Briggs said.
Units were on scene about an hour, Briggs said. When the first units arrived on the scene there were visable flames, but they were able to contain the fire to the living room of the house, Briggs said. There were six people inside when the fire started, two adults and four children, but they were all able to get out safely, Briggs said.
“The occupants were asleep and the smoke detectors woke them up,” Briggs said. “The man said he went down the hall, saw the fire in the living room, went back got all four kids and his wife. All six went out the bedroom window. The smoke alarm saved their lives.”
The fire remains under investigation, but Briggs said they believe it started due to an electrical issue.
