Child hit leaving bus remains in hospital, driver facing additional charges

A second grade student who was hit by a car after getting off the school bus Wednesday afternoon remains in the hospital, Vicksburg Police officer Judson Maglorie said.
The 9-year-old Dana Road Elementary School second-grader was hit by a Buick LeSabre after she exited the school bus and was crossing Washington Street in front of Vicksburg Fire Satiation 7 Wednesday. She was taken by ambulance to River Region Medical Center where she was still be monitored for her injuries sustained in the accident as of Thursday morning, Maglorie said.
He added a specialist is being brought in due to injuries the student suffered to her mouth.
Ditanun Demon Simpson, 30, who was driving the car, was taken into custody at the scene after failing to stop for the school bus. Simpson is facing a felony charge of passing a school bus while unloading. Maglorie said the charge is a felony because a pedestrian was injured. Simpson is also facing misdemeanor charges of no drivers license, no proof of insurance and reckless driving.
Maglorie said witnesses at the scene and the driver of the bus said the bus’s stop sign and arm were out as students unloaded, but Simpson failed to come to a complete stop at anytime before hitting the student as she crossed to her home on the opposite side of Washington Street from the fire station.
