Vicksburg Post staffers were among the winners in the 2017 Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors contest that were announced Saturday at the World War II Museum in New Orleans.
Dozens of AP-member newspapers and TV and radio broadcasters in both states submitted more than 1,400 entries in the contest that honors the best in journalism in 2017. The AP is a not-for-profit news cooperative with 1,400 newspapers and 5,000 broadcasters in the United States.
The Vicksburg Post took both first and second place in the Layout & Design category while competing in Division I, which includes both Louisiana and Mississippi newspapers whose total weekly circulation is up to 75,000.
Staff photographer Courtland Wells won in the Multi-Photo category and took second place in the General News category.
Veteran Vicksburg Post sports writer and sports editor Ernest Bowker garnered a first place award in the Sports Action photography category, while also picking up a second place award in the Personal Column category.
“We are very proud of the work of all of our staffers, and it makes us happy their peers recognize the top-notch journalism they produce,” said Jan Griffey, The Post’s general manager. “Ernest and Courtland are among the best in the industry.”
