MIAMI — Southern Miss pitcher Stevie Powers threw the team’s first complete-game shutout in almost three years to lead the Golden Eagles to a 5-0 victory over Florida International on Friday night.

Powers, pitching in place of usual Friday night starter Nick Sandlin, allowed nine hits but only walked one batter. He finished with 10 strikeouts.

His shutout was the first for Southern Miss since Cody Carroll blanked Marshall on May 2, 2015. It was also the first complete game of Powers’ college career.
