Warren Central sweeps region golf titles

The Region 4-6A golf tournament was more of a formality than an actual tournament for Warren Central. The girls’ team only had to post a score — any score — to qualify for the Class 6A state tournament, and the boys needed to not have their worst day of the year.

Both teams did a lot better than those modest goals.

Karley Whittington shot a 71 and Chance Bishop an 80 to earn medalist honors in their respective tournaments, and both Warren Central squads claimed the team titles as well with their best rounds of the season.

The Lady Vikes shot a 160 and the Vikings a 328. The boys’ team needed to shoot 365 or lower to advance to the state tournament.

Clinton’s boys shot a 366 and missed the cut by one shot.

The MHSAA Class 6A girls state tournament is April 30 and May 1 at Sunkist Country Club in Biloxi. The boys’ tournament is May 2 and 3 at Lake Caroline Country Club in Madison.

“We brought out four trophies and we’re taking four trophies home,” WC coach Matt Williams said. “We wanted to post a good score and beat Clinton, because we wanted to take home our first (boys) district trophy in I don’t know how long. They played it about as good as you could play it.”

Warren Central and Clinton were the only teams in the tournament. Provine had two golfers competing as individuals in the boys’ tournament, but four are required to make a team score.

The tiny field made for a relaxed setting on a chilly, wet day at Clear Creek Golf Course.

“It’s kind of just fun to let loose and go play. It was kind of like practice, but I had a lot of fun because we ended up playing in a sixsome,” Whittington said. “It’s more of a confidence booster. It’s really just trying to get in the last group for the state tournament.”

Whittington made three birdies during her round to offset two bogeys, and the Lady Vikes got a boost from senior Mia Wamsley, who shot a personal-best round of 89. The top two scores count toward the team total in girls’ golf.

Whittington and Wamsley’s combined score was 66 shots better than the 226 shot by Clinton’s Haley Tatum and Remi Nichols.

“Mia’s peaking at the right time and so am I,” Whittington said. “I’ve only shot under par three times this year and it’s been the past two tournaments. So we’re peaking at a good time.”

Warren Central’s boys, meanwhile, posted their best score of the season with a 328. Bishop’s 80 led the way, but all five of the team’s golfers broke 90. Grahm Tweedle shot an 81, Hartley Sullivan an 82, Taylor Lampkin an 85, and Zane Flaharty an 86.

Hunter Hulsey shot an 85 and was Clinton’s only golfer to break 90.

“Everybody was in the 80s, and it was a tough day. The course was wet and it was playing longer, but they battled through it. They played really well and I’m really proud of them,” Williams said. “It shows the work that we’ve put in the last four or five years. Since that group in 2014 left, it’s been a struggle. It’s gratifying to see that our work has paid off to shoot under 330 in district, on a day that was not supposed to be good for scoring.”
