WC high jumpers advance to state meet

Warren Central’s high jumping trio was reduced to a duo, but the Vikings still had an impressive showing Saturday at the MHSAA Class 6A North State track and field meet.

Mason Quimby won the boys’ high jump and Raven Thompson was second in the girls’ high jump as seven WC athletes advanced to the Class 6A state meet Friday at Pearl High School.
The top four finishers in each event at the North and South State meets qualified for the state meet.

Quimby cleared 6 feet in the high jump and then beat Columbus’ Kenneth Martin on a tiebreaker to win the competition for the second week in a row.

Quimby’s teammate Jalen Glass did not have as good a day, however. Glass, who had cleared 6 feet, 7 inches earlier this season and was expected to contend for a state title, was one of four jumpers on Saturday who failed to clear a height. The senior missed the cut in that event, and also in the 200 meter dash where he finished fifth -— just .05 seconds behind Oxford’s Jaquan Webb.

Webb was fourth in 22.23 seconds, Glass fifth in 22.28. Clinton’s Kristopher Moore won the 200 meters in 21.15 seconds.

Warren Central’s other qualifiers among the boys were Jaylen Whitaker in the discus and shot put; Brandon Fischer in the pole vault; Raymond Rimmey in the 300 meter hurdles; and the 4×100 meter relay team.

Whitaker finished second in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 11.75 inches.
On the girls’ side, Thompson will lead a small Warren Central contingent to the state meet. The Mississippi State signee cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump, but lost to Madison Central’s Asia Poe on a tiebreaker. She’ll get another shot at the state meet.

Hannah Huntley finished third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 45.03 seconds, and third in the 3,200 meters in 13:05.75, and was the only other Lady Vike to advance.

WC’s 4×100 and 4×200 meter relay teams both missed the cut, as did Shanea Guise in the long jump and Ernestine Chin in the shot put. Guise and Chin finished fifth in their respective events.
