Vicksburg Swimming Association built on a strong first day at the Stamm Family Invitational Friday by having an even better one Saturday, winning in a total of 18 events.
“We had a good day, a lot of best times, especially with our younger groups,” VSA coach Mathew Mixon said. “A lot of first time swims going the long distance. When you have six-and-under, seven and eight-year-olds swimming 100-meter events it’s a challenge, there’s a lot of adults who can’t make 100-meter swims. So a lot of kids doing big things for the first time, so that’s always exciting, and then our older kids are doing well, especially for this point in time in the season.”
Abi Wallace, led the way for VSA, winning five solo events on the day. Grace Woolsey, continued her strong performance, adding three more wins after winning in four events on Friday. Bree Butler added two solo event wins of her own as well.
For the boys, Scott Wallace, Mason Adler, Tommy Martin, and Matthew Busby each won an event.
“Pretty happy across the board as far as the different things we look at as a coaching staff,” Mixon said. “We’re not just looking at the time, we’re looking at how hard are they pushing, are they racing? The rest of the coaching staff and myself were pretty happy.”
VSA also won four relay events, with the team of Ferrell Frances, Anna Norwood, Elle Lason and Kate Whitman winning the girls’ 12 & under 200-meter freestyle relay.
In the boys’ 12 & under 200-meter freestyle relay, the team of Austin Norwood, Beau Harris, Jon Daniel Busby and Tony Fields won.
The team of Leah Larson, Emily Cook, Abi Wallace, and Adrienne Eckstein, won the girls’ 200-meter freestyle relay, and the team of Scott Wallace, Nate Crimbley, Andrew Fields, and Martin won the boys’ 200-meter freestyle relay.
Mixon felt the team’s performance would pay dividends moving forward.
“It’s a big morale booster for the kids,” Mixon said.
