Who will represent the Democratic Party and challenge incumbent Sen. Roger Wicker for his senate seat in November will be determined when David Baria and Howard Sherman face-off in Tuesday’s runoff election.

Warren County Election Commission Chairman Sara Dionne reminds registered voters that only those who voted on a Democratic ballot or did not vote at all June 5 are eligible to vote Tuesday.

“Crossover voting is prohibited in Mississippi,” Dionne said. “You may not vote in this election if you voted on a Republican ballot on June 5.”

Dionne said the election commission prints new pollbooks for runoff elections.

“The computer fills the ‘voted’ box with grey fill to indicate those voters who voted on a Republican ballot in the primary election June 5,” Dionne said.

Baria and Sherman were the top vote getters in the Democratic primary election earlier this month among a field of six contenders, but neither gained the necessary 50 percent majority to secure the win.

Three weeks ago, Sherman — who has never held political office — received 27,358 votes statewide and Baria — a former state legislator from Bay St. Louis — garnered 26,568 statewide votes. Sherman also won Democrats in Warren County with 566 votes, while Baria was third with 382 votes behind runner-up Omeria Scott, a state representative from Laurel, who received 518 votes in Warren County. No other candidate received more than 80 votes.

All precincts in Warren County will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and voters who may have questions are welcome to contact the circuit clerk’s office at 601-636-3961.
