The House of Peace Worship Church International will have its annual back to school giveaway Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the church.

“We’ve been doing this for the past 15 years,” said pastor Linda Sweezer. “We give out about 300 book bags every year.” The child must be present to receive the supplies.

She said the book bags contain the school supplies for children in kindergarten through high school. “The bags for junior high school and high school will have a few more things in them because of the school work they do,” she said.

After the bags are distributed, Sweezer talks to the student about working hard in school and doing well, and prays over them for a successful school year.

Back to School Bash

Meanwhile, for the third consecutive year the Back to School Bash hosted by the Young Xecutives will be Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. at Rodney Store, 1318 South Street.

Jeremy Meekins, chairperson of the Young Xecutives, said vendors will be set up along the blocked off section of street providing food, face painting for the kids, sno-cones, as well as school supplies.

Meekins said this is an opportunity to “reach back into our community and make it better once again.”

“Young Xecutives is focused on strengthening our teenage community with hopes of instilling strong Christian values,” Meekins said. “We are focused on helping to cultivate the younger generation as they grow into mature young individuals.”
