What’s to become of other fields?

With the construction of the Sport Force Parks on the Mississippi under way on Fisher Ferry Road, some residents are wondering what will happen to the Halls Ferry and Bazinsky baseball and softball complex that has served the city for years.
But South Ward Alderman Alex Monsour, who is over the city’s recreation department, said the parks’ ball fields and the tennis courts at Halls Ferry will continue to serve the community.
“Halls Ferry Park will be used for recreation, and the private schools — St. Aloysius and Porters Chapel — will be able to use the fields, because they don’t have adequate facilities at their schools,” Monsour said.
He said the fields will still be available for the local baseball, softball and kickball leagues for games and practice, and for small softball and baseball tournaments.
He said future plans call for additional tennis courts to allow the city to compete for major tennis tournaments. The city in 2015 expanded the number of courts at Halls Ferry from 10 to 14 to attract tennis tournaments to the city. But Monsour said more courts are needed to attract larger tournaments.
“Right now, the number of courts is inadequate to attract the larger tournaments,” he said. “That’s my future plans, to get the park ready for the tennis and the recreational use.”
