DENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos backup quarterback Chad Kelly has been arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass after he randomly entered a couple’s home and was beaten by the homeowner with a vacuum-cleaner tube.

According to the Englewood Police Department, the former Ole Miss star was taken into custody early Tuesday. It’s not clear if he has an attorney to comment on the case.

According to an arrest affidavit, one of the homeowners, a woman, was sitting on a couch just inside the front door while holding her young child after 1 a.m. when Kelly entered uninvited and sat down next to her, “mumbling incoherently.”

The woman called for a second resident, a man, who confronted Kelly and hit him with an aluminum vacuum tube with plastic ends in the upper back as he kicked Kelly out of the house.

The man told police the doors to the residence were locked, but there were no signs of forced entry, according to the affidavit.

Officers began to search the area after reviewing security video of the front of the house that showed a man wearing dark pants, a white long-sleeve shirt with a brown vest and a red scarf around his neck.
His clothing appeared to be disheveled, police said.

A man matching the description was found inside a black SUV in front of a theater a block away from the residence.

The man was detained without incident and he identified himself to officers as Kelly.

The male homeowner was brought to the theater where he positively identified Kelly as the man who entered the residence uninvited. The homeowner told officers he wanted to pursue criminal charges and Kelly was arrested.
Englewood Police said Kelly did not have any alcohol in his system.

Court officials say Kelly posted $2,500 bond and is due back in court Wednesday. First-degree criminal trespass is a felony.

“We are disappointed that Chad Kelly was arrested early this morning,” the Broncos said in a statement. “Our organization has been in contact with Chad and we are in the process of gathering more information.”

Kelly was taken by the Broncos with the final pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has only played in one regular-season game, but was 40-of-66 passing for 466 yards and three touchdowns this preseason to beat out former first-round pick Paxton Lynch for the backup job.

In 2014, Kelly was dismissed from the Clemson football team for various offenses, including attitude issues. He landed at East Mississippi Community College and then Ole Miss, where he threw for 6,858 yards and 50 touchdowns in two seasons as the starter.

In December 2014, Kelly was arrested following an altercation outside a bar in Buffalo, N.Y., when he got into a fight with bouncers and resisted arrest. His plea deal resulted in the criminal charges being dropped in exchange for a guilty plea to disorderly conduct and 50 hours of community service.
