Ghosts, goblins and super heroes will be among the maskers taking to city and county streets and roads Wednesday night for the annual Halloween custom of trick-or-treat.

“Sheriff (Martin) Pace and I have gotten together and set trick-or-treat for Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.,” Vicksburg Police Chief Milton Moore said.

“We will have two shifts of officers, the traffic division and juvenile investigators out Wednesday night,” he said.

Pace said all sheriff’s deputies will be out Wednesday during trick-or-treat.

“We ask drivers to be especially cautious and attentive for children who may be on or near public streets as they go door to door,” Pace said.  “We ask parents, if possible, to go with their children or have an adult go with them as they trick-or-treat.”

He recommended that because of possible food allergies, adults check the candy before children eat it, and encourage children not to eat the candy as they receive it, out of concern that a child may be allergic to something in the candy that was dropped in their bag.

“Children should also wear light-colored clothing and carry a flashlight if possible,” he said. “We strongly suggest that people limit the hours of trick-or-treating to right after people come home from work, at 5:30 and try to have it completed shortly after dark so the children aren’t out too late, if possible. You certainly don’t want small children out late at night.”
