Planter’s Hall, once the home for the garden clubs of Vicksburg, has at various times during its life been filled with the aroma of fresh blossoms.

The Agape Montessori Christian Academy now occupies the building, and Tuesday the aroma of meat and chicken cooking on the stove filled the building’s hall, and the menu was Mexican as the 15 students in Meg Falls’ Spanish class cooked up a fiesta.

The class’ Taco Tuesday fundraiser, Falls said, is the first of a series of activities to raise $9,000 for a class trip to the Yucatan to visit the Mayan ruins and other cultural areas. The group has a carwash planned Saturday at Whataburger, and another event being planned for April.

“I wanted to take them some place different to get a taste of different cultures,” she said of the field trip. “I’m having the students do a research paper on the area before they go on the trip.”

The Taco Tuesday menu gave people buying a ticket a choice of two beef tacos or two chicken quesadillas. The $12 meal included refried beans, rice and a chocolate chip cookie.

“We sold 300 plates,” Falls said.

Her students, she said, were involved in the preparations, getting the ingredients ready and the meat cooked.

“We cooked 60 pounds of ground meat donated by Goldie’s, El Sombrero donated rice, Newks gave us sour cream, Foam Packaging donated the take-out containers, and Sullivan’s Market and Corner Market each gave us money to buy ingredients from their stores,” she said.
