Municipal Judge Toni Walker Terrett continues to lead Angela Carpenter by less than 200 votes in the race for 9th Circuit District Judge Place 1 following the counting of absentee ballots in Warren County.

A total of 13,984 voters, about 44 percent of the county’s 31,836 registered voters, cast ballots Tuesday.

Unofficial returns show Terrett with 2,920 votes to 2,772 for Carpenter — a difference of 148 votes. The totals include voting precinct returns from Issaquena and Sharkey counties, but do not include absentee or affidavit ballots from those counties.

Terrett won in Warren County with 2,070 votes to 1,625 for Carpenter, but Circuit Clerk Jan Hyland Daigre said the Warren County total does not include about 400 affidavit ballots that will be counted Thursday, and four voter ID ballots that will not be counted until next week. People voting without ID have five working days to present a valid ID to have their ballot counted.

Carpenter won in Issaquena and Sharkey counties, getting 339 votes to 161 for Terrett in Issaquena County, and 808 votes to 689 for Terrett in Sharkey County. A spokesman for the circuit clerk’s office in Issaquena said the county had six voter ID ballots remaining to be counted.

A spokeswoman for the Sharkey County Circuit Clerk’s office said Wednesday afternoon the county’s 169 absentee ballots were counted, but have not been included in the vote total. She said the office has 10 affidavit ballots that have not been counted.

In other local races

Marcie Southerland defeated Richard “Ricky” Johnson to replace County Judge John Price, who is retiring. Unofficial returns show Southerland with 7,983 to 6,521 for Johnson.

In the Central District constable’s race, Troy Kimble had 2,193 votes to 1,734 for Mario Grady to win that office.

Jeffery Harness will face JoAnn Collins-Smith in a runoff to fill the unexpired term of former District 85 Rep. America “Chuck” Middleton, who resigned in September. Harness led the four-candidate race, getting 2,747 votes to 2,056 for Collins-Smith. Tyler Doss received 1,824 votes, while Maurice Hudson had 1,381.

In the race for the 2nd District Appeals Court seat, Deborah McDonald of Fayette will face Eric Hawkins of Greenville in a runoff. McDonald finished first in the race with Hawkins running second. Former Court of Appeals Judge Ceola James of Vicksburg finished third. The district includes the Mississippi Delta and parts of Jackson.
