Military veterans across our nation will be honored today and Monday for their service in defending our country, and rightfully so. But our soldiers should be honored every day and not just on the 11th day of November or Memorial Day in May.

We should all thank our veterans when we see them on the street or in public and tell them how appreciative we are for their commitment in protecting our country. We should also support them by our presence at such events like today’s ceremony in the Rose Garden on Monroe Street at 11 a.m., as well as Monday’s 10 a.m. parade downtown.

The service marks the 100th anniversary of Germany’s surrender marking the end of World War I.

“The reason we’re holding the service Sunday is because the importance of Veteran Day is the time the war actually ended, which was the 11th month, the 11th day and the 11th hour,” Veterans Day observance chairman Willie Glasper said.

Another way to honor our veterans is by our presence at the ballot box. Warren County registered voters should be commended for the large turnout at precincts during the general election Tuesday, but there is a runoff election Nov. 27 that will decide the special election for U.S. Senate between Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy. A few Warren County precincts are also involved in a special House District 85 race.

We should all be mindful that the reason we have the freedom to cast a ballot is because of the sacrifice so many veterans have given up for us.

Honor them Nov. 27.
