Vicksburg will be a presence at Saturday’s SWAC Championship game at Alcorn.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen at a special meeting Wednesday approved three requests for sponsorships involving the game and activities totaling $10,500. The sponsorships are allowed under a state law that lets cities and counties purchase advertising at events and in publications to promote the area.
Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said the city’s advertising during events like the SWAC title game and other activities has created interest and attract people to the city.
“One of the reasons we’re enjoying all this prosperity, the (sales) taxes (revenue) coming up, is because we’re advertising just in every magazine, newspaper and at same time we’re broadcasting,” he said.
He said the SWAC Championship, like the Nov. 17 Alcorn-Jackson State football game, is having an effect on the city’s hotels, adding “every hotel is full for the weekend.”
According to the meeting agenda, the city is contributing $1,000 to help sponsor a two-day party for Alcorn students and alumni; $8,500 for advertising at the game, including a banner promoting the city on the 50-yard line at the stadium, provide digital advertising and an ad in the championship game booklet. The city is the secondary sponsor for the game, Flaggs said.
The city is donating $1,000 to the Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Association Inc. for the broadcast of the game, making the city a primary sponsor for the broadcast.
In other action, the board approved an option involving the city’s self-insured employee health plan involving coverage of catastrophic claims, and approved the claims docket to pay city bills.
