Volunteers unable to find local homeless

Attempts by volunteers to locate homeless people during Tuesday’s annual Point in Time count in Warren County proved fruitless, Mountain of Faith’s executive director said Wednesday.

The annual Point in Time Count is required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to determine funding for programs local agencies use to help the homeless. The amount of funding Warren County receives depends on the number of homeless in the area.

“We didn’t find anybody yesterday when we went out,” Mountain of Faith executive director Betty James said. “We went out yesterday morning and tried to find some and then went out last night trying to find some.”

She did not know if the cold weather might have been the reason for the lack of homeless people being out. Although the count is done at night, James said the count began Tuesday morning because of concern about the weather.

“We went to the (River City) rescue mission, and the people there were working. We thought we may find some coming in at lunchtime to eat, but we didn’t find any. Last night we went back out,” she said.

“We went downtown, we went into the Kings area, all up in that surrounding area, to the mission by the ball park and down by the floodwall, we didn’t find anybody.”

This year’s count was the second time volunteers were unable to find people. In 2018, the Point in Time count found 46 homeless people. The 2017 count located 175.
