In its first week of operation, Sports Force Park on the Mississippi will host its first college game.
Hinds Community College has moved its Wednesday baseball doubleheader against Baton Rouge Community College from its home field in Raymond to the new facility on Fisher Ferry Road.
Hinds coach Sam Temple, a Vicksburg native, said the move was made because of steady rain on Tuesday and more in the forecast for Wednesday.
Hinds and BRCC will play two seven-inning games beginning at 3 p.m.
Weather permitting, it will be the first college baseball or softball game played at Sports Force Park, which opened last weekend. Sports Force Park has artificial turf fields, unlike Hinds’ Joe G. Moss Field. Hinds has also played games at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson — which also has artificial turf — when its field was unplayable.
Also Tuesday, Warren Central’s baseball and softball teams moved home games scheduled for Thursday to Sports Force Park. WC’s baseball team will play Germantown, with the junior varsity game starting at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7. The softball team will play Lake at 5 and 6:15 p.m. There will not be an admission charge for any of the games.
Hinds wasn’t the only college baseball team in Mississippi adjusting its schedule because of the weather.
Southern Miss was supposed to play Troy at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Wednesday night, but canceled the game because of the forecast. No makeup date has been announced.
Southern Miss will travel to Starkville on Friday to start a three-game series against Mississippi State. The Golden Eagles and Bulldogs will play at 4 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at the newly-renovated Dudy Noble Field.
Southern Miss also postponed a softball doubleheader against Alcorn State that was scheduled for Wednesday in Hattiesburg. It has been rescheduled for March 12 at 4 p.m. at Southern Miss.
Ole Miss pushed its midweek home baseball game against Arkansas State back one day, from Tuesday to Wednesday. They’ll play at 5 p.m. at Swayze Field in Oxford.
