Red Cross lifeguard class
An American Red Cross Lifeguarding class will be held April 1-12 at the Purks YMCA, 267 YMCA Place.

The 30-hour class will meet from 6 to 8:45 p.m. each weeknight for two weeks. Those interested must be at least 15 years old or turning that age no later than April 12, 2019, in order to participate and receive certification.

Lifeguard candidates must complete a strength and endurance test that includes a 300-yard swim and several timed speed, strength, and endurance tests.

Cost for the course is $125 for YMCA members and $175 for non-members. The class will be taught by veteran ARC instructors Susan and Bob Athow and Sylvia Gurtowski.

Hinds basketball tryouts
Open tryouts for the Hinds Community College men’s basketball team will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 5 p.m. at J.D. Boyd Gym on the Utica Campus.

The tryout is open to all interested basketball players who have already graduated from high school. All players must email a copy of their up-to-date physical to coach Jonathan Nevol at jonathan.nevol@hindscc.edu. All players must also bring a hard copy of their up-to-date physical to the tryout.

Baseball, softball umps

The Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Department is seeking baseball and softball umpires for its upcoming spring adult and youth seasons. Anyone interested in umpiring games can pick up application forms at the Parks and Rec offices at 100 Army Navy Drive.
