On Monday, Porter’s Chapel Academy faced a tough left-hander who threw 87 mph. On Tuesday it saw a much slower pitcher, and the difference required an adjustment at the plate.

The Eagles handled it just fine.

Michael Tod Andrews went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, three other players drove in two runs apiece, and the Eagles rode a big second inning to a 16-3 win over district rival Hillcrest Christian.

PCA scored 12 runs in the second inning to break a 2-2 tie, and won in four innings via the mercy rule.

“I told the guys after the Monday game that we’re going to have to make that adjustment early. Don’t wait until the later innings. If we think we’re the better team, let’s jump out early,” PCA coach Wade Patrick said. “We scored two runs in the first and then came back with 12 in the second and it gave us a little breathing room.”

PCA (5-5, 1-2 District 3-AAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and picked up its first district win. It will head to Jackson on Friday for the second half of its home-and-home series with Hillcrest.

“We wanted to get something strung together and get that winning feeling back. We had some tough losses in the (spring break) tournament. I just wanted them to get that taste back in their mouth of winning, and build off of that,” Patrick said. “Win the ones you can win, and then the ones that are a toss up if you play well enough you’re going to win. We’ve showed we can play with people. Now we’ve just got to put it together for a full game.”

After getting only one hit and striking out 14 times in a 10-0 loss to Bayou lefty Zack Willingham on Monday, the Eagles had a far easier time with Hillcrest.

Andrews hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning and Wade Dickard later scored on a ground out to stake PCA to a 2-0 lead. After Hillcrest tied the game in the top of the second inning, the Eagles opened the floodgates in the bottom half.

Seventeen batters came to the plate, including 10 before the first out was recorded. Leon Simms hit a two-run double, while Spencer Azlin had two RBI singles.

When it was all over, the Eagles held a 14-2 lead and the game was all but over.

PCA finished the game with nine hits. Josh Smith only had one, but walked twice, had two RBIs and scored three runs. Dickard walked three times and scored three runs, and Josh Hunt also scored three times.

Andrews, Azlin, Simms and Smith all had two RBIs apiece.

Azlin pitched four innings and allowed three runs. He only gave up two hits and struck out four batters, but walked seven.

“For the most part, we did what we needed to do to get a win. My biggest thing was to put the ball in play and make them make a play. Don’t strike out, and good things will happen. That’s what happened last night,” Patrick said.

Germantown 20, Vicksburg 0
Bryson Ware went 2-for-3 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored, and Braden Montgomery was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored as Germantown (6-4-1, 4-0 Region 4-5A) hammered Vicksburg High (3-5, 0-3) Tuesday at Bazinsky Field.

Germantown scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and eight more in the second to put the game out reach immediately. Every starter scored at least one run, and eight of the nine scored at least two.

Kendrick Bershell had Vicksburg’s only hit, a single in the bottom of the first inning.

Warren Central 14, Greenville 4
Warren Central shook off a stubborn Greenville team by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday to earn a run-rule victory at Viking Field.

Three errors led to Warren Central’s first three runs in the big fifth inning, which started with the score tied at 4. Shane Lewis delivered an RBI single for the go-ahead run, Chase Graham hit an RBI triple, and then four straight walks and a hit batter pushed the lead to 11-4.

Lewis came to the plate again and hit a two-run single, then scored the game-ending run on a double by Landon Bull.

Lewis finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, home run, five RBIs and two runs scored. Bull doubled twice, had one RBI and scored twice. Hank Holdiness had two RBIs and scored two runs, and Wesley Ricks was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Vantrel Reed allowed four runs in five innings, but also had 11 strikeouts and earned the victory.

Warren Central (12-4, 4-0 Region 4-6A) and Greenville (7-5, 0-3) will play again Friday night in Greenville.

St. Aloysius 16, Park Place 0
James Trichell had three RBIs, Kieran Theriot went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and St. Aloysius crushed sloppy Park Place in the first half of a home-and-home series Tuesday in Pearl.

Park Place committed 11 errors. Only one of St. Al’s 16 runs was earned. St. Al (6-3, 3-0 District 3-AAA) had eight hits.

Adam Francisco scored three runs while Brandon Steed and Tyler Breithaupt scored two each.

Haden Luke pitched a five-inning shutout. He allowed six hits, walked one batter and struck out five.
