Agreement with Viking Cruises another dose of good news for riverfront, Vicksburg

Bachman Turner Overdrive released a song in 1974 titled “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” And, by plans and projects unveiled in recent years by the Vicksburg Board of Mayor and Aldermen, with a good dose of announcements by the Vicksburg-Warren Chamber of Commerce, we are starting to get the feeling that should be this city’s theme song.
This newspaper was admittedly critical of the city a few years ago by lack of foresight for what development of the city’s riverfront could mean — would mean — for our local economy.
After the rebirth of the city’s riverfront development committee, investments and growth by the Port, and so on, that is something we can no longer say.
Wednesday’s announcement that the city had agreed in principle with Viking River Cruises to building a dock on the riverfront, bringing yet another river cruise to our shores, business is definitely picking up.
Those cruises, when they start arriving in 2021 or later, will add to the already growing number of dockings and visitors we see each year.
In fact, 2019 is expected to bring more than 130 dockings and nearly 30,000 visitors.
But, again, the theme song … “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.”
The retail, residential, cultural and culinary development along Washington Street and the downtown district has been staggering.
More is yet to come.
The arrival of Catfish Row Museum in the coming months will be yet another dollop of flavor to the luscious lifestyle developing along our riverfront.
And let us not forget the improvements made to the farmers market, which are nearly complete. Had it not been for a gallon or two or three of rainfall in recent months, that project might have already been completed.
The plans in place are staggering, beautiful and needed. Plans in place will make Vicksburg more of a destination location than it already is.
Wednesday’s announcement by the city and Viking River Cruises was just the latest, but “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.”
