A two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Heather Drive and Freetown Road left a young mother injured Sunday afternoon.

She was airlifted from Merit Health River Region to the trauma unit at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for treatment, said Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace.

Pace said at about 1 p.m., Avery Dickinson, 21, who was driving a Toyota sedan, prepared to turn left from Heather Drive onto Freetown Road.

In the car with Dickinson were front-seat passenger Jessie Dickinson and their two children:  a 1-year-old child and an 8-day-old infant.

The Dickinsons are residents of Vicksburg.

Pace said the children were appropriately strapped into car seats in the back seat of the vehicle.

He said as Dickinson prepared to turn left onto Freetown Road, two cars were on Freetown, coming toward the intersection with Heather Drive.

“The first car had its turn signal on and turned into a driveway just before Heather Drive,” Pace said. “Ms. Dickinson could not see that another vehicle was right behind the vehicle turning into the driveway, and began her turn onto Freetown. The two collided. They just didn’t see each other.”

The vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Robert Chamblee, also of Vicksburg, hit the driver’s side of Dickinson’s Toyota sedan.

Pace said it took fire department personnel “quite some time” to free Dickinson from the vehicle.

She was transported by ambulance to Merit Health River Region and loaded directly into an awaiting AirCare ambulance and flown to UMMC.

No update on the extent of her injuries is available at this time.

Pace said he thinks the children were taken to Merit Health River Region to be check out as a precaution, but he did not think they were injured.
