Sections of two major streets in Vicksburg have been added to the city’s paving list.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen at a special meeting Wednesday approved adding the intersection of Pemberton Square Boulevard and Halls Ferry Road, and paving on Indiana and Porters Chapel Road.
“We’re going to start at the intersection of Indiana and Porters Chapel,” South Ward Alderman Alex Monsour said. “We’re going to pave Indiana as far as the fire station (Fire Station No.2), and then pave Porters Chapel as far as Raintree Road. These were streets that needed some work on them before we could pave them.”
In other action, the board also approved several items related to the Floodfest event Saturday at Redwood Elementary School.
The board approved a request from Mayor George Flaggs Jr. to reserve the city’s motor coach Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to midnight for use at Floodfest, as well as for Floodfest organizer Tommy Parker to use the motor coach.
The board also voted to allow Parker to use 75 crowd control barricades at the event and to spend $1,000 on advertising for it.
Floodfest is scheduled for Saturday in Redwood. The event to benefit victims of the Yazoo Backwater flood begins at 1 p.m. at Redwood Elementary with a touch a truck event. Vendors will also be in attendance.
Evening activities including music, auctions and other entertainment begin at 5:30 p.m. The featured act is country music star and Vicksburg native William Michael Morgan. Admission to the evening events is $5.
Festivalgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, but no coolers are allowed.
Parking at the school will be reserved for handicapped guests. Off site parking will be at Merit Health River Region on U.S. 61 North. The city will provide shuttle buses to ferry festivalgoers to and from River Region. The shuttle service will be available beginning at 4:30 p.m.
