Merit Health River Region to again host ‘Pretty Woman’ event

With the success of last year’s inaugural Pretty Woman event, Merit Health River Region will once again offer a day geared toward women.
Wednesday, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., a resource fair will be set up in the atrium of the hospital, 2100 Highway 61 N. A Pretty Woman luncheon is scheduled for noon.
The luncheon will feature a panel of doctors who will take questions from the audience, Merit Health River Region marketing director Leigh White said.
“Dr. Gatlin, who is the radiologist will be able to answer any questions regarding mammography, and Dr. Pierce, who is an interventional cardiologist, will answer any women-specific heart issues,” White said.
Also on the panel will be Dr. Shaw, who is an OB/GYN at River Region, Dr. Mizell, a family medicine physician and urologist PA-C Carrie Eure.
Participants will be allowed to write down questions and turn them in, White said.
Questions will then be fielded to the panel of providers allowing for anonymity.
White said by doing it this way, those attending might ask questions they might otherwise consider too embarrassing to ask.
“They may have something that is very personal, so this way you will not know who wrote the question,” she said.
During the resource fair, tables will be set up with providers offering information on various women’s health issues including nutrition, diabetes and stroke and falls awareness.
White said pediatric and OB/GYN providers would be represented, among others.
“We also hope to have someone there doing a depression screening, and I am also trying to get someone to come in and demonstrate post-partum exercises,” White said.
There will be a mammography table set up where women can ask questions about mammograms and breast cancer and the “giant pink chair” will be on site.
“This is the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer awareness chair and it is huge. It is inflated and you can climb up in it and have your picture made,” White said. “The purpose is to bring awareness about breast cancer.”
Also, from 1 to 2 p.m., participants can tour the mammography department.
All the events are free, but reservations must be made for the luncheon.
