With September now in our rear view mirror, what will we remember from the month?

Will we remember September for a month where violent news made the headlines and crime was the topic dominating just about every conversation?

Will we remember September for a month where a life was taken and others were threatened by gunfire and violence?

Or, will we remember September as a month where we as a community said enough? Will it be the start of something, where the community stood in lock-step with law enforcement agencies to find those responsible for crime in our community?

According to our Google Analytics, of the 15 top items viewed at www.vicksburgpost.com, 11 of those were death or crime-related articles.

As we move into a new month, there are crimes from September — and before — that remain unsolved. There are shootings within the city limits and in the county that remain under investigation and suspects who remain on the loose.

Just one person who makes one phone call and offers one tip can solve each of those investigations. But those who know something must have the courage to say something.

If we are to truly eliminate — or at least curtail — crime in our community, we must have the courage to stand up and say enough. We must have the courage to stand up to those who commit or foster crime.

There is plenty to be proud of in Vicksburg and Warren County. For those of us who live, work, pray and play in this community, we are blessed in so many ways.

With that blessing, though, comes responsibility.

For us to preserve the community we have or grow to the community we envision, crime cannot stand, and we cannot stand for crime to continue.

What will we remember of September? Will we remember it for the tragedy that took place or the kick in the rear we as a community needed to stand up and say enough?
