The Area 10 Special Olympics track and field meet that had been scheduled for March 24 has been canceled, Area 10 games director Lucy Young said on Monday.

The track meet was for elementary students and was to be held at Halls Ferry Park. The coronavirus outbreak, however, forced it to be canceled along with nearly every other event or gathering involving large numbers of people.

“The state has mandated that no events with more than 50 people go on, and all Special Olympics events were canceled,” Young said. “We don’t know when we could reschedule it.”

Young added that she hopes the event can continue next year, and thanked Area 10’s sponsors.

“We appreciate the Kiwanis Club, the Vicksburg High Key Club, and all of our volunteers,” Young said.
