Wednesday marks 81 days since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in Warren County. It also marked its deadliest day.

The Mississippi State Department of Health announced two new virus-related deaths in Warren County, bringing the total to 14. Wednesday also marked the second-worst day in the number of new confirmed cases, as 18 were reported overnight.

The highest number reported on one day was May 10, when 19 cases were reported.

Overall, Warren County has now seen 280 cases reported since the start of the pandemic.

Statewide, state health officials reported 489 new cases and 23 additional virus-related deaths. Those figures push the number of cases reported in Mississippi during the pandemic to 20,648 with 938 deaths.

“Today we saw 489 new COVID-19 cases — a large number by any measure,” Gov. Tate Reeves said in a post on his personal Facebook page Wednesday. “I’m concerned that people are losing interest in the effort to keep each other safe. We are all tired and ready to be done, but the virus doesn’t care. Please be on your guard — small efforts have a big impact!‬”

Claiborne County reported 144 total cases with nine virus-related deaths Wednesday, while Sharkey County saw its number of cases move to nine overall — an increase of one overnight.

In Yazoo County, health officials reported 354 cases with six deaths. Issaquena County remains the only county in the state to not yet report a case.
