Health officials announced Friday the state of Mississippi saw another day of new COVID-19 cases surpassing the 1,000-mark, as 1,032 new cases were reported statewide. Overall, the state has now reported 40,829 cases since the first case of the pandemic was reported on March 11.

The state also reported 24 new virus-related deaths, bringing the death toll of the pandemic to 1,332.

The ongoing spike in recent numbers statewide has put stress on the state’s healthcare infrastructure.

In its Friday report, the state reported 1,076 people hospitalized with confirmed COVID-19 cases or those who are awaiting test results. The number of patients in intensive care units reached a new high Friday, as 253 patients are now in an ICU. The state reported 129 patients are now on ventilators.

In Warren County, 22 new cases were confirmed Friday. So far, since the first case was reported in Warren County on March 29, the county has reported 671 cases and 22 virus-related deaths.

The 22 new cases mark the fourth-highest one-day total reported in Warren County during the pandemic. The highest one-day total is 33, which was reported on July 3 and July 16. The second-highest total is 24, which was reported on July 10.

So far in July, Warren County has reported 246 cases or a rate of nearly 14.5 new cases per day.

Yazoo County Friday reported 671 total cases, while Claiborne County reported 328 total cases. Sharkey County is now reporting 58 total cases, with Issaquena County reporting 12.

Sharkey County is one of just two counties in Mississippi that has not reported a virus-related death. The other county is Benton County.

Louisiana health officials announced Friday that Madison Parish has now reported 468 cases and six virus-related deaths.
