Each year four seniors in the Vicksburg Warren County School District receive scholarships from the David L. Hubbard Foundation.

Hubbard served in the U.S. Army for 25 years and to honor her father’s memory, four years ago Shonna Hubbard-Morton established a foundation that awarded scholarships to a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps student from both Warren Central High School and Vicksburg High School.

This year will mark the fifth year the foundation has awarded the scholarships, and in an effort to help raise money to fund those scholarships, a yard sale will be held Friday and Saturday at 1824 Mac Arthur Drive.

The yard sale will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon.

Morton said the first year the scholarships were offered she knew she was doing the right thing.

In the process of reading essays submitted by the applicants, Morton said one student’s essay really stood out.

“I read over his application and when I got to the end, the student had written, ‘I will be honored to receive the David L. Hubbard scholarship. He was the first man that taught me how to salute,’” Morton said. “Tears were coming down my eyes.”

Although Hubbard died in 2007, the student applying for the scholarship had met Morton’s father.

Morton said her mother had been the student’s babysitter when he was a child and during that time, the student had met her father.

She said the foundation that honors her father was formed so students involved in the JROTC programs could further their education.

Morton’s father had joined the military at 18 and did not have the opportunity to go to college.

“He went into the military straight out of high school,” she said.

Many of the items available during the yard sale will be coming from the home of Dr. Wanda Newell.

Newell, who has been a supporter of the foundation, is moving from Vicksburg and is donating everything in her house to the yard sale.

“For her to give me everything in her house to sell,” Morton said. “There are just no words.”

In addition to Newell’s generosity through the years, Morton said, the city of Vicksburg and Leo Turnipseed have strongly supported the foundation.

Contributions to the yard sale are still being accepted and volunteers are needed to help.

Items in the yard sale will include indoor and outdoor furniture, lamps and artwork from Newell’s home, as well as other donations.
