Porter’s Chapel Academy went into its regular-season finale Friday night needing to slay a giant to earn a .500 record and have a chance at securing a playoff berth.

Omar Emmons scored two touchdowns, on a 66-yard interception return and a 90-yard run, and three-time defending MAIS Class 3A champion Greenville-St. Joseph trounced PCA 48-0 on Friday.

Emmons’ two touchdowns were among four that Greenville-St. Joe (7-1, 2-1 MAIS District 4-3A) had covering 25 yards or more. Carson Graham ripped off a 65-yard TD run, and Elvis Scott caught a 25-yard pass from C.J. Moore.

Moore also scored on an 8-yard run, and Kaleb Lockett had a 16-yard TD run to finish out the Irish’s scoring.

Porter’s Chapel (4-6, 0-3) could have earned just its second .500 finish with a win, and also had a chance to end a six-year playoff drought with a victory and some help.

It got neither.

Greenville-St. Joe scored 41 points in the first quarter, and all of its points in the first half.

“We went into the game down some starters, and then we lost a couple more in the first quarter. It was a lack of depth, and then it snowballed,” PCA coach Blake Purvis said.

On the positive side, the four wins PCA finished with was its most since 2017, and one more than it had combined in the last two seasons.

“I think, all in all, we improved. Even in our six losses there were little things we can draw from,” Purvis said. “We’re in a better place now than where we started back in June, and we’ve got a good group moving forward.”
