Gloria Swanson stars in “Her Gilded Cage” at the Walnut Theater. • Dr. and Mrs. George Street and children return from Buena Vista, Va. • Zaidee Nield is doing nicely following surgery. • Robert Whitten and Lucy Ross secure a marriage license. • Willie Gathright leaves to study at Millsaps College.
90 years ago: 1932
Frank McCowan, former resident, dies in San Juan, Puerto Rico. • Mrs. Susan Eatmon dies in Biloxi. • E.A. Halford Jr. goes to St. Louis where he will teach at the Deaf and Dumb School. • Crawford McGiveran, principal of Carr Central High School, is speaker at a meeting of the Y’s Men’s Club.

An Army general hospital will be built near Jackson. • Corp Stanley Stratton is here from Ohio visiting his parents.

Mrs. Lola Hallberg is elected president of the Mercy Hospital Alumnae Association. • James Ramsey completes his law course at the University of Mississippi. • Mrs. Earl Metzen is elected vice president of the local American Legion Auxiliary.

Sam Donnell, former resident, dies in St. Louis, Mo. • The Cooper Greenies defeat Tallulah 34-0 in their opening game. • Caroline Birchett returns from a European tour. • Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Barfels of Utica announce the birth of a daughter, Sharon.
50 years ago: 1972
Beta Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi holds its Beginning Day activities in the home of Mrs. Fredda Hobgood. • Marguerite Stegall, Warren County tax collector, is attending the Tax Assessors and Collectors Association meeting in Jackson.
40 years ago: 1982
Dr. and Mrs. Terry Jackson announce the birth of a daughter, Angela Marie, on Sept. 1. • Vicksburg takes a 19-13 win against Yazoo City. • Services are held for Troy Boone.

City property taxes in 1993 will be the highest since 1989. • Jon Wesley Webb celebrates his first birthday. • Eudora Welty photographs will be on display at the Firehouse Gallery. • Courtney Michele Maddox and Michael Ellis Keathley are married.

Daniel Donohue, of Cub Scout Pack 115, receives the God and Family Award at Crawford Street United Methodist Church. • Stephen Louis Corley graduates summa cum laude from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. • Henry C. Major dies.

Standing water left behind by Tropical Storm Isaac could cause more danger than the storm’s gusting winds and relentless rain due to the mosquitoes spreading West Nile. • A man accused of punching a police officer and another accused of having his dog attack a firefighter were held without bail.
