Voting is now open in The Vicksburg Post’s Athlete of the Week contest.

This week’s nominees are football players Dennis Battle (Vicksburg High), Thomas Azlin (Porter’s Chapel) and Thompson Fortenberry (St. Aloysius), and Warren Central swimmer Ashtin Wallace.

Battle, a junior linebacker, had two sacks in the second half of an 18-16 victory against Callaway on Oct. 20.

Azlin, a senior tight end and linebacker, caught three passes for 51 yards and a touchdown; and had a team-high 11 tackles and two tackles for loss in a 42-13 win over Prairie View Academy on Oct. 20. The victory clinched PCA’s first district championship since 2008 and improved their record to 11-0.

Fortenberry, a junior running back and linebacker, had 104 total yards and 10 tackles in a 35-14 loss to Winston Academy on Oct. 20. Fortenberry had 40 yards rushing and 64 receiving.

Wallace, a member of Warren Central’s boys’ swim team, was part of the winning 200 yard medley relay and had second-place individual finishes in the 200 yard individual medley and 100 butterfly at the MHSAA Class II state meet on Oct. 21. Wallace helped the Vikings finish second in the team standings as well.

Voting is open until midnight Tuesday; you can vote more than once; and you can vote once per hour until the deadline. The winner will be announced Wednesday.
