Vicksburg National Military Park presenting program on Black banks in Vicksburg

The Vicksburg National Military Park will host a special program on Nov. 4 titled, “Blood Money: From the Freedman’s Bank to Liberty Bank, the Legacy of Vicksburg’s Black Banks,” presented by Professor Shennette Garrett-Scott.

The program will take place at the Visitor Center Theater from noon to 1:30 p.m. Garrett-Scott is the author of the multiple award-winning book, “Banking on Freedom.”

She is an Associate Professor of History & Africana Studies and a Gibbons Professor in the College of Liberal Arts at Tulane University.

The VNMP invites guests to learn more about the role of U.S. Colored Troops soldiers and officers in this chapter of Vicksburg history and ways to use Freedman’s Bank and Black banking records for family and local community research.

An entrance pass will not be required to join the program in the Visitor Center; however, an entrance pass will still be required to access the tour road.
