The Vicksburg Kiwanis Club, with help from Vicksburg’s Home Depot, built three garden planter boxes for the Cedars Head Start program.
Kiwanis members set up the planters in the spring and helped the students plant flowers, vegetables and herbs. The students took care of them and were able to eat some cucumbers and tomatoes they had grown.
Kiwanis members went back this past week and cleaned the boxes and planted cold-weather plants. While there, the members read a book called “Anywhere Farm” to the students and gave each child a copy of the book.
The Kiwanians plan to continue to help these students with the planter boxes and in doing so teach them about growing their own food.
Head Start prepares Warren County’s most vulnerable young children to succeed in school and life beyond school. Head Start programs deliver services to children and families in core areas of early learning, health and family well-being while engaging parents as partners every step of the way. Cedars Head Start is located on Cedars School Circle in Vicksburg.
