Leaders with the Vicksburg Warren School District, after consulting with Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer, have decided to close all district schools and offices Friday, Jan. 12.
A weather advisory is in place for high winds, some of which could gust to 80 mph, making bus travel treacherous.
There will be no after-school tutoring, officials said Thursday afternoon, but several sports events are still on. Vicksburg High’s soccer teams are scheduled to host Columbus at 5:30 p.m., and its basketball teams are at home against Ridgeland at 6. Warren Central’s basketball teams will play a girls-boys doubleheader at home against Columbus beginning at 6 p.m.
The VWSD will be monitoring the weather closely for the return of students and staff on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and will provide further updates as needed on Monday, Jan. 15 by 2 p.m.
“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority,” officials said. “Please stay weather-aware.”
Additionally, Vicksburg Catholic School, Porter’s Chapel Academy, Travelers Rest Christian Academy, and Agape Montessori Christian Academy will all close their doors Friday, with information for next week pending weather updates.
St. Aloysius’ home basketball games vs. Cathedral were postponed and have been rescheduled for Jan. 25. A Monday basketball game at Greenville Christian, and a home soccer game vs. Adams County Christian School have also been canceled and no make-up dates were announced.
Porter’s Chapel Academy’s home basketball game vs. Prairie View Academy on Friday was postponed as well. The teams will play at Prairie View on Jan. 20. A game originally scheduled to be played at Prairie View on Jan. 26 will be played at PCA instead.
Hinds Community College Vicksburg campus officials said no closures are scheduled at this time.
