A stormy night led to a long day for St. Aloysius’ baseball team.
St. Al won one out of three games against Cathedral on Thursday, beating the Green Wave 5-2 in the middle game of a rare tripleheader.
Cathedral won 6-4 in the conclusion of a suspended game, and then crushed the Flashes 17-0 to close out the evening.
Cathedral was leading 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning when a severe thunderstorm forced Tuesday night’s game in Vicksburg to be suspended. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader Thursday in Natchez, so they picked up the action then and there.
St. Al rallied to tie the game on Walt Andrews’ RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Cathedral scored twice in the eighth to retake the lead for good.
Owen Jordan hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the go-ahead run, and the Green Wave (18-4, 7-2 MAIS District 4-5A) added an insurance run on a passed ball.
The second game of the day was St. Al’s best.
Keller Bradley carried a shutout into the seventh inning, and the Flashes scored five runs in the top of the seventh to earn the 5-2 victory.
Bradley finished with eight strikeouts. He hit the first two batters in the seventh inning and was pulled for Andrews, who allowed two runs to score but also got the last two outs to close out the victory.
Bradley hit a two-run triple during the big seventh-inning rally to put the Flashes ahead 3-0. Damien Reeves drove in the first run with a single, and Carson Smith hit another RBI single later on.
The good times did not last for the Flashes, however. Jordan and Drake Cox each had two hits and two RBIs, and Ethan Keith went 3-for-3 with three RBIs as the Green Wave swamped St. Al 17-0.
Keith also pitched a five-inning shutout. He allowed three hits and two walks, and struck out three batters.
St. Al only had three hits, while Cathedral racked up 14 off of four pitchers.
St. Al (12-11, 6-3) will be back in action Monday, when it hosts Copiah Academy at 6 p.m. at Bazinsky Field. The teams will also play a doubleheader in Gallman on April 19.
