A stream of first-place finishes flowed right to a district championship for St. Aloysius’ girls’ track and field team.

Samantha Edwards swept all three distance races, Annslee Averett won both hurdles events, and Megan Theriot won the 400 meters to lead the Lady Flashes to a first-place team finish at the MAIS District 4-5A meet on Thursday.

The six victories accounted for 36 of St. Al’s 64 points. They just edged past Adams County Christian School, which had 60 points, Cathedral (58) and Providence Classical (51) in a four-way battle for the title.

Edwards did the most damage for the Lady Flashes by winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs. She had a time of 2 minutes, 28.76 seconds in the 800; 5:39.13 in the 1,600 meters; and 13:35.92 in the 3,200.

Edwards won the 800 meters by 13 seconds, the 1,600 by 41 seconds, and the 3,200 by a minute and 20 seconds.

Averett was a multiple winner as well, with victories in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. She won the 100 with a time of 19.25 seconds, and the 300 in 53.93 seconds. She won the 300 meters by more than eight seconds over ACCS’ Maddie Donaldson.

Theriot only won one event — the 400 meters, in 1:03.97 — but contributed two second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 meters, as well as serving on a pair of second-place relays.

Theriot joined Averett, Madelyn Kavanaugh and Kelci Bingham on the 4×100 and 4×200 meter relays that posted times of 54.91 seconds and 1:56.53, respectively.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the Class 5A South State meet that will be held next week at Silliman Institute in Clinton, Louisiana. Field events and the 3,200 meter run are on April 24 and all other running events on April 27.

Also moving on for the Lady Flashes were Kavanaugh in the 400 meters; Presley Brister in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump; and Julia Moberley in the shot put and discus.

For St. Al’s boys’ team, Ace Oglesby qualified for South State in the 100 and 200 meters, and Sam Hall in the 400 meters. They finished fourth in all three events.
