JACKSON — Tomekia Reed has closed the book on an outstanding run as Jackson State’s women’s basketball head coach.

Reed was hired Thursday as the head coach at Charlotte, ending a six-year tenure at Jackson State that included three NCAA Tournament appearances in four seasons.

Reed won five consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season championships, and led Jackson State to conference tournament titles in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

The Tigers lost to eventual Final Four team Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this season. That loss snapped a 21-game winning streak that was the longest in the country entering the tournament.

Reed won the SWAC Coach of the Year award four times in six seasons. She had a 125-54 record at Jackson State, including a remarkable 95-10 record against SWAC opponents. The Tigers only lost two conference games in the past four seasons.

“I want to thank Tomekia for what she has done for Jackson State women’s basketball,” Jackson State VP/Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson said in a statement. “The work she did during her time here at Jackson State is unmatched and we wish her nothing but the best at Charlotte.”

Before her stint at Jackson State, Reed was the head coach at Hinds Community College from 2015-18. She has also been an assistant at Jackson State — early in her career, long before she returned as head coach — Louisiana-Lafayette, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and New Orleans.

The Jackson native was a first-team All-State player at Hinds in 2001.

Charlotte is coming off its first season competing in the American Athletic Conference. The Niners finished 16-15 and lost in the first round of the AAC Tournament.

“Tomekia Reed is one of the most talented young coaches in college basketball today. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence, both on and off the court,” Charlotte Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber said in a statement.
