In Game 2 of its softball playoff series against Grenada, Warren Central got all of the clutch hits it didn’t produce in Game 1 — and a whole lot more.
Kamryn Morson went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, Sarah Cameron Fancher had three hits and scored three runs, and Warren Central racked up 13 hits as a team to beat Grenada 11-3 on Saturday to keep its season alive.
After each team won on the other’s home field in the first-round MHSAA Class 6A series, Warren Central (21-6) and Grenada (15-6) will come back to Vicksburg for the winner-take-all Game 3 Monday night. First pitch is at 6 p.m. at WC’s Lucy Young Field.
Warren Central left six runners in scoring position in a 3-0 loss in Game 1, but got most of them home in Game 2.
The Lady Vikes scored one run in the top of the first inning, and then four in the second to jump in front 5-0 early. Fancher and Morson each had RBI singles, with Morson’s coming with two outs and the bases loaded.
The Lady Vikes did leave two runners on base in the fourth inning, but put together rallies in the sixth and seventh to pull away.
Keke McKay and Morson each hit RBI singles in the sixth to push the lead to 7-2, and in the seventh it was Jenn Smith, Madison Pant and Morson again with RBI singles that made it 11-2.
Warren Central’s Makayla Jackson reached base three times and scored three runs, as did Smith. Pant was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and McKay drove in two runs as well.
Eight of Warren Central’s nine starters had a hit. The first three batters in the order — Jackson, Fancher and Smith — scored nine of the Lady Vikes’ 11 runs.
In the pitcher’s circle, Pant tossed a complete game. She allowed four hits and no walks, with eight strikeouts, and all three of Grenada’s runs were unearned.
