The Vicksburg Missy Gators made a run at the MHSAA Class 6A North State track and field team title. They settled for an outstanding day that set them up for a chance at a state championship.
The Missy Gators won six events and advanced 12 entries to next week’s state meet, as they finished second in the team standings Saturday at the Class 6A girls’ North State meet at Center Hill High School.
Vicksburg totaled 103 points to just edge out Center Hill, which had 102. South Panola pulled away late to score 129 points and win the team championship.
Warren Central finished fourth with 87 points.
Vicksburg won two relays — the 4×200 and 4×400 — as well as four individual events.
Shaniyah Walker was on both winning relay teams and won the 400 meters with a blistering fast time of 58.10 seconds. She also finished fourth in the 200 meters, in 26.20 seconds, to advance to the state meet.
Joining Walker on the 4×200 relay were Aubrey Turner, Amiya Hall and To’nia Taylor. McKenzie Edmond, Jekeyla Curry and Terri Boyd were on the 4×400 relay.
Kennedy Williams won the discus, with a throw of 89 feet, 3 inches. Her teammate Jamiya Stewart finished fourth with a throw of 83-8.
Rodrianna Hall and eighth-grader Zion Knox also won one event each. Hall, a senior, won the long jump with a mark of 17-8 1/2 and finished third in the triple jump at 35 feet even. Knox won the triple jump with a mark of 36-7 and was second to Hall in the long jump at 17-5.
Hall also finished fourth in the high jump, while her teammate Edmond was third.
Warren Central sprinter Adria Burrell advanced to the state meet in four events. She won the 100 meters in 12,30 seconds, finished second in the 200 in 25.80 seconds, and was third in the 400 in 1:00.80.
Burrell also joined Ka’ryn Henderson, Zakiya Watkins and Za’Mya Malone on the 4×200 meter relay that finished second in 1:48.01.
Burrell’s victory in the 100 meters was the only one of the day for the Lady Vikes, although several other athletes did advance to the state meet.
Distance runners Cora Lindsay and Abigail DeJesus finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200 meters to both advance.
The Lady Vikes will also have two throwers competing in the shot put next weekend. Arrionna Jenkins finished second with a mark of 32-5 1/2, and Mariah Burnett was third at 31-5. A third Lady Vike, Marissa Stewart, placed sixth and was eliminated from the postseason.
Mere’ Smith also finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, with a time of 49.80 seconds, to move on.
The top four finishers in each event at the North and South State meets advanced to the Class 6A state meet on Saturday, May 4 at Pearl High School. Field events will begin at 11 a.m.
The Class 1A and 3A state meets will be held on May 3 at Pearl. Classes 5A, 6A and 7A compete on May 4, and Classes 2A and 4A on May 6.
