With many in Vicksburg and the surrounding areas still without power following Monday night’s severe weather, the National Weather Service in Jackson is warning of a second round of rain and wind Tuesday.

According to NWS, severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 60-70 miles per hour and hail up to a quarter size are possible from early Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer said the next round of weather may delay progress for those still without power following Monday’s storm.

“I think that we’re gonna get another line of cells like we had last night,” Elfer said Tuesday afternoon. “Maybe it’s going to be a little bit earlier (than it was Monday), so I think what I would tell people is just make sure you’re paying attention to the latest weather.”

Elfer said, even without the complication of added weather, a timeline for restoring power to those affected by Monday’s storm will differ depending on the electrical provider.

“It depends on the power company,” he said. “If you’re on a rural power grid, like Yazoo Valley or Twin County, they generally get everybody back on pretty quick. It just depends on which grid you’re on.”

Elfer said the fastest way for residents to have power restored following inclement weather remains simply alerting providers; however, most are aware of issues following storms and begin work to restore service as soon as weather permits, he added.
