Softball Roundup: St. Al wows as Schoonover watches; River Oaks outslugs PCA

St. Aloysius’ softball team put on a show for their VIP guest.

With former St. Al and University of Kentucky pitcher Stephanie Schoonover in attendance, the Lady Flashes racked up 12 hits and rolled to a 15-2 victory over Tensas Academy on Monday.

Ruthie Britton doubled and drove in four runs for the Lady Flashes (5-3), while Madison Spencer was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Madelyn Kavanahugh and Kennadi Blassingame each had two RBIs, and Blassingame and Mageigh Haller scored two runs apiece.

Landy Elqady walked three times and scored three runs.

Britton’s two-run double in the bottom of the first inning gave the Lady Flashes a 2-1 lead and they never relinquished it. They scored six runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to finish the game via the mercy rule.

Mallory Spencer hit an RBI double in the third inning, while Blassingame, Addie Grace Clay and Britton each hit RBI singles. Kavanaugh hit an RBI triple and scored in the fourth inning, and Madison Spencer’s RBI single finished it.

Kennadi Williams was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored for Tensas Academy.

Schoonover threw out the first pitch before the game as St. Al welcomed her back to the Betty Foley Hearn Softball Complex. Schoonover played one season at St. Al, in 2015, before moving to Alabama and becoming one of the state’s top players

Schoonover was the 2019 Class 5A Pitcher of the Year at Rehobeth High School in Dothan, Alabama. She went on to play at Kentucky, where she has a 38-18 career record and 406 strikeouts in 96 games. She threw two no-hitters in 2022.

St. Al will host Tallulah Academy Tuesday at 6:15 p.m., and then is at Jackson Academy Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.

River Oaks 21, Porter’s Chapel 10
A few days before they meet in the MAIS football season opener, Porter’s Chapel Academy and River Oaks put up a football score on the softball field.

Ainsley Doles went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, five RBIs and two runs scored, and Abby Keys was 3-for-3 with a four RBIs as River Oaks outslugged PCA on Monday.

River Oaks drew 15 walks from PCA’s pitchers, and also took advantage of seven errors. It scored 14 runs in the last three innings to break open a game that was tied 7-7 after four.

Mia Abdo led PCA’s offense by going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. Marley Bufkin scored three runs and Lauren Rae Davis drove in three.

PCA (4-5) will try to rebound Tuesday when it plays Jackson Academy at 7 p.m. at Key City Park (formerly Sports Force Parks).
