VWSD: Student found with pellet gun at bus stop

The Vicksburg Warren School District (VWSD) has confirmed a suspended student from South Park Elementary was found with a pellet gun Wednesday morning at a bus stop.

“The situation was brought to our attention, and we took swift action to ensure the safety of all students,” VWSD officials said in a statement. “Our school district takes these matters very seriously. We want to assure you that no students were harmed. Local authorities were notified, and the student is being dealt with according to district policies and legal protocols.”

Wednesday’s incident comes after a perceived threat of a school shooting at Warren Central Junior High School was made last week over Instagram. VPD Chief of Police Penny Jones said the threat was quickly deemed not credible, but added additional officers would be placed in local schools for the foreseeable future as an added safety measure. VPD has not yet released information regarding Wednesday’s incident.

“Safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to maintaining a secure and positive learning environment for all students,” VWSD said. “We encourage families to have conversations with their children about the dangers of bringing any item that may be perceived as a weapon to school or school-related activities.”

More information about Wednesday’s incident will be released as it is made available.
