Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College piled up the points on Thursday, and its Warren County connection made plenty of contributions to the pile.
Warren Central alum Trey Hall rushed for 163 yards — a lot of them on a 93-yard touchdown in the third quarter — and former Vicksburg High star Tyler Henderson caught a touchdown pass as the Bulldogs beat Southwest Mississippi 55-36.
Henderson finished with three receptions for 68 yards, including a 38-yard TD midway though the second quarter that gave Gulf Coast a 27-7 lead. It was the freshman’s fourth touchdown of the season.
Hall had his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game.
Gulf Coast quarterback Landon Varnes was 16-of-24 passing for 224 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. In addition to the 38-yarder to Henderson, Varnes threw two TD passes to JP Coulter and one to Jeremiah Foxworth.
No. 5 Gulf Coast (4-0, 2-0 MACCC South) will play at home in Perkinston against Pearl River on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Mississippi Delta 23, Hinds 7
Quarterback Troy Griffin ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as Mississippi Delta (1-2) beat Hinds Community College (0-4) for its first win of the season.
Griffin rushed for 125 yards, including scoring runs of 1 and 58 yards. He was 11-of-18 passing for 74 yards, with a 23-yard TD to Daniel Hall in the second quarter.
Hinds’ offense continued to sputter. It finished with only 182 total yards, and its only points came on an 11-yard pass from Jabari Watson to Ja’Montae Wallace in the third quarter.
Through its first four games, Hinds has scored a total of 17 points and is averaging 148.3 yards per game of total offense.
Former Vicksburg High star Kearris Gilliam had five solo tackles and one tackle for loss for Hinds.
Itawamba 36, East Mississippi 34
Eli Burciaga kicked a 27-yard field goal with 23 seconds left that gave Itawamba Community College (3-1, 1-0 MACCC North) a stunning road upset of East Mississippi (1-3, 0-2).
Itawamba beat East Mississippi for the first time since 2012.
Burciaga’s field goal brought the fourth lead change of the fourth quarter in a wild, back-and-forth game. East Mississippi had taken a 34-33 lead on a 5-yard TD run by Gavin Griffin with 1:52 remaining, and a failed two-point conversion left the door open for Itawamba to win it.
Ty Davis completed three straight passes on Itawamba’s winning drive, including a 46-yarder to Tyran Mosley that moved the ball to the EMCC 17-yard line to get them in range for Burciaga.
Davis finished the game 17-of-31 passing for 294 yards, with four touchdowns and three interceptions. Mosley caught six passes for 128 yards and a TD, and Chris Reed caught four for 116 yards and two TDs.
For East Mississippi, Griffin had 84 rushing yards and one touchdown, and Jaylen Jennings had 91 yards and a TD. Quarterback Ty Keyes ran for 58 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 244 yards and a score.
Jones College 21, Copiah-Lincoln 12
Blake Murphy threw two touchdown passes, and No. 12 Jones College’s defense forced three turnovers in beating No. 9 Copiah-Lincoln (2-2, 1-1 MACCC South) on Thursday.
It was the seventh straight win for the Bobcats (3-1, 1-1) over the Wolves.
Murphy was only 8-of-16 passing for 116 yards, and Jones finished with 196 yards of total offense, but the two touchdown passes made the difference. Murphy had a 53-yard TD to Shawn Keyes in the second quarter and a 17-yarder to Harrison Knight with 2:11 remaining that sealed the win.
Tray Minor finished with 95 rushing yards for Co-Lin, and Jordan Richardson caught nine passes for 80 yards.
Northwest 35, Coahoma 16
D’mariun Perteet rushed for a career-high 138 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 14 Northwest Mississippi (3-1, 2-0 MACCC North) to a road win against Coahoma Community College (0-4, 0-2)
Northwest Mississippi committed three turnovers in the first half, but also scored 28 points to take control of the game.
Zach Wilcke threw two touchdown passes for the Rangers and finished 7-of-14 passing for 159 yards. He was intercepted twice.
Damian Gonzalez kicked three field goals for Coahoma, from 25, 20 and 33 yards.
Holmes 41, Northeast Mississippi 7
Chase Richardson completed 27 of 35 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another score as Holmes Community College (4-0, 2-0 MACCC North) routed Northeast Mississippi (1-2, 0-1) to remain undefeated.
Rayshawn Hardy had a rushing and a receiving touchdown for Holmes, and Dandreyus Giles scored on a 23-yard interception return. The Bulldogs led 13-7 at halftime, then scored 28 unanswered points in the second half.
Northeast Mississippi finished with just 164 total yards. Holmes had six sacks.
Pearl River 23, East Central 20
Morgan Craft kicked three field goals in the fourth quarter, the last a 32-yarder as time expired that gave Pearl River Community College (3-1, 2-0 MACCC South) a walk-off win against East Central Community College (2-2, 0-1).
East Central took a 20-14 lead on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Landon Sims to Josh Palmer with five minutes left in the third quarter.
In the fourth, Craft hit field goals of 38 and 34 yards to tie it with 3:12 left, and then the game-winner from 32. The Wildcats’ final drive was set up by A.J. Prim’s interception that gave them the ball at the East Central 23-yard line with 1:53 remaining.
Pearl River quarterback Ian Gonzalez was a modest 10-of-14 passing for 60 yards, but ran for 80 yards and a touchdown. Keenan Franks led the Wildcats with 134 rushing yards on 24 carries.
