CLINTON — The streak. Is. Over.

Pierson Smith ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and for the first time in more than two years the St. Aloysius Flashes walked off the field a winner as they defeated Clinton Christian 19-6 on Friday.

St. Al (1-4, 1-1 MAIS District 2-4A) snapped a school-record 23-game losing streak that started in Week 2 of the 2022 season.

“It was awesome to see. I almost started crying, but I promised myself I wouldn’t in front of them,” first-year St. Al coach Walker Mosby said. “I wanted to break down right there because you know how much work these guys put in day in and day out, and then they finally get to see it pay off after all this time. It’s great to see.”

The Flashes used a dominant rushing attack to score 19 unanswered points after trailing 6-0 at halftime. Smith scored on a pair of 3-yard runs, and Thompson Fortenberry added a 5-yard TD with 5:47 left in the fourth quarter to seal it.

Fortenberry finished with 81 rushing yards, and the Flashes totaled 320 yards as a team. Sadler Lambiotte had 37, Carson Smith had 20, and Evan Mallard had 14.

Mallard and Fortenberry also had four tackles apiece on defense. Keller Bradley had four tackles, as well as two interceptions.

Kyle Crandall scored Clinton Christian’s (2-4, 0-1) touchdown on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

“I couldn’t be more proud of a group of guys. They faced adversity, they’re down at the half, we couldn’t get anything clicking on offense, and then the second half we get everything fixed and they fight all the way back,” Mosby said. “Kudos to those kids. They played their tails off.”
