100 YEARS AGO: 1924

Cisterns at the city cemetery went dry. • Mr. R.E. Balinger returned from a visit with relatives in Alexandria, La. • Radio enthusiast Frank Gulde was in touch with the dirigible Shenandoah as it crossed Texas.

90 YEARS AGO: 1934

Cotton advanced nearly $1 a bale when the government estimate was placed at $9,443,000 bales. • P.A. Armstrong, a former Warren County resident, was killed in an auto accident in Dallas.

80 YEARS AGO: 1944

Otho Mendrop, a former member of the Carr Central faculty, was visiting Vicksburg. • Mr. and Mrs. Noel Nutt announced the birth of a daughter.

70 YEARS AGO: 1954

H.E. Risher, retired Illinois Central engineer, died. • John Timms died. • The Rev. Peter Torney assumed duties in Vicksburg as assistant at St. Paul Catholic Church.

60 YEARS AGO: 1964

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Downing were visiting relatives in Seattle. • Mr. and Mrs. Carl McLemore announced the birth of a son, John. • Mr. And Mrs. J.C. Sevens announced the birth of a son, James. 

50 YEARS AGO: 1974

The Warren Central Vikings came from behind to defeat the Hazelhurst Indians 36-14. • Mercy Hospital Auxiliary observed its 15th anniversary. • Iley Behr, of Vicksburg, performed in Belhaven College’s production of “Bye Bye Birdie.”

40 YEARS AGO: 1984

A project to add a new room to the Old Courthouse was completed. • A couple was hospitalized after a shooting on South Street. • Parkside Playhouse was preparing for its annual performances of “Gold in the Hills.”

30 YEARS AGO: 1994

Police were searching for a suspect in the stabbing of two people at a Vicksburg High School football game. • T&J Utility Co. was set to close if it was not sold by the end of October. 

20 YEARS AGO: 2004

The flea market was held around the Old Courthouse square. • Carr Central High School held its annual reunion. • The Fall Pilgrimage was held featuring tours of 12 historic homes and landmarks around Vicksburg.

10 YEARS AGO: 2014

Vicksburg resident Josephine Harris Sanders was the subject of the book “Our Josephine.” • Retired Vicksburg Police Department Sgt. Doug Arp was recovering from open-heart surgery.
