Riverfield pulls away in the second half to beat St. Aloysius

St. Aloysius made some plays on defense and special teams against Riverfield Academy.

Unfortunately, offense is where the points come from.

The Flashes only had 135 yards of total offense, and its struggles on that side of the football helped Riverfield pull away in the second half for a 41-5 victory Friday.

“We had multiple opportunities to punch it in the first half. We just couldn’t. We struggled running the football tonight and moving the football offensively. The defense really set us up,” St. Al coach Walker Mosby said. “We’ve got to get the ball moving offensively, and that’s my fault.”

St. Al led 5-0 at the end of the first quarter. John Ellis Montgomery kicked a 34-yard field goal, and Jake Walker  got a sack in the end zone for a safety. The Flashes (1-6) also blocked a punt, Walt Andrews had an interception, and Thompson Fortenberry and Evan Mallard had six tackles apiece.

Trae Long scored on a 6-yard run in the second quarter, however, to give Riverfield a 7-5 lead at halftime and it never trailed again. The Raiders (6-1) got their running game going in the second half and scored 34 of their 41 unanswered points in the last two quarters.

Long added a 60-yard TD run in the third quarter, while Colton Herrington scored four times on runs of 54, 8, 31 and 5 yards.

“They came out the second half and they just ran the football. They stuck to what they always do. They didn’t get out of it. They can move the football when they want to run it, that is for sure,” Mosby said.

St. Al lost its second game in a row. It’ll be home for the next two, for homecoming next week vs. Columbia Academy and on Oct. 18 against Manchester.

“Special teams and defense, we played great. Offensively, we’ve just got to figure it out,” Mosby said.
