Ben Brown is leaving Las Vegas and shipping up to Boston.
The New England Patriots announced Thursday that they have signed the Vicksburg native and former Ole Miss offensive lineman from the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.
Brown was signed to the Patriots’ 53-man roster, meaning he will be eligible to play this Sunday against the Houston Texans. Teams can only have 48 of their 53 players active on game day, so it is uncertain if Brown will play against the Texans.
Brown is listed as the backup center on the Patriots’ unofficial depth chart, behind starter Nick Leverett. Leverett has been limited in practice this week because of an ankle injury.
Under NFL rules, a player signed from another team’s practice squad must be added to the 53-man roster for a minimum of three weeks.
The sudden cross-country move is the latest in a topsy-turvy NFL career for the 26-year-old former St. Aloysius High School star.
Brown signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and spent that season on injured reserve after tearing his biceps tendon in the preseason. He was released by the Bengals at the end of training camp in 2023 and signed with the Seattle Seahawks a week later.
Brown played in one game with Seattle, but was released again at midseason. The Arizona Cardinals signed him to the practice squad for the final game, released him afterward, and he then signed a futures/reserve contract with the Raiders.
He played in all three preseason games with the Raiders, but the team released him again at the end of this year’s training camp and signed him to the practice squad. He has not been elevated to the active roster for any games this season.
