Eye in the sky: City installs camera near site of shootings

The City of Vicksburg has added a new camera to its existing inventory of more than 200 spread throughout town.
Thursday afternoon, city workers installed the newest security equipment at the corner of Drummond and Speed streets, just a few feet from a home that was presumably the target of two shootings in three days last week.
In the wake of those shootings, which authorities believe were literally aimed at home at 1107 Speed Street, residents of the nearby Fostoria neighborhood held a community meeting where Ward 2 Alderman Alex Monsour promised a new camera would quickly be delivered.
Monsour, who heads up the city’s IT department, said the issue of outdated cameras is being addressed through the acquisition of technologically advanced equipment, which are able to capture details current city cameras are not capable of recording. Thursday morning, Monsour said the new camera at the intersection of Speed and Drummond would provide a 360-degree look at the area that will be monitored by law enforcement.
In the days following the pair of shootings, the Vicksburg Police Department (VPD) placed a mobile camera on Speed Street, directly across from the residence at 1107, a move Chief of Police Penny Jones said she hoped would act as a temporary deterrent until a permanent camera arrived.
With the new camera now installed, Mosnour said updates on the next wave of equipment will be coming soon from city hall. In the meantime, Jones said VPD continues to work to address the rash of recent shootings in the area.
Monsour said residents of any Vicksburg neighborhood wanting to have a new camera installed should call 601-636-4507.
